"War Room" Tops the Box Office Over the Labor Day Weekend

War Room, a 'faith based' drama, looks certain to edge out the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton to take the top spot at the North American box office over the long Labor Day holiday weekend. This is the fifth film from Alex and Stephen Kendrick, the award-winning creators of Fireproof, Courageous and Facing the Giants, War Room made its debut Aug. 28 in theaters nation-wide through Sony Pictures Entertainment's TriStar Pictures.
The film, which was panned by critics, gained traction in its second week of release and pulled in enough people to move from runner-up to number one, ending the F. Gary Gray-directed rap movie's three week reign at the top.
"War Room" took 9.35 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales for this weekend, down 18 percent from ticket sales earned in its first weekend of release. The low-budget film produced by Kendrick Brothers cost 3.5 million dollars to make and grossed 24.7 million dollars in ten days of release.
"This is by far the Kendrick brothers' finest work, and I can't believe I get to be a part of it," says John Waller who sings the movie's lead single "Crazy Faith.""Alex and Stephen have been so gracious to bring me along for the ride."
"I knew when I heard 'Crazy Faith' it would be the perfect song for War Room and would inspire people all over the nation!" exclaimed Alex Kendrick as he prepares for the movie debut.
The movie deals with the issue of prayer. With great jobs, a beautiful daughter (Alena Pitts) and a dream house, the Jordans seem to have it all. Appearances can be deceiving, however, as husband Tony (T.C. Stallings) flirts with temptation and wife Elizabeth (Priscilla Shirer) becomes increasingly bitter, crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. Their lives take an unexpected turn for the better when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara (Karen Abercrombie), who encourages the couple to find happiness through prayer.
