July 7th Episode of "The Bachelorette" Reveals the Tragic Death of Former Contestant Eric Hill to Bachelorette Andi Dorfman
Shows like "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" have never been known for being overly tasteful or classy, and yet for some inexplicable reason, we continue to tune in for season after season of "reality" television as beautiful singles attempt to find their soulmate on live TV. However, something a little different happened on the episode of "The Bachelorette" that aired on July 7...
Most watchers of reality TV are fully aware that most events that happen on each episode are not necessarily reality; many are pre-planned or even scripted. Fans of "The Bachelorette" will differ on this point, but the events of this particular episode were truly disturbing. Bachelorette Andi and her remaining bachelors were brought over to host Chris Harrison's house for a seemingly spur-of-the-moment meeting. It was there that Chris revealed to Andi and the others that former contestant Eric Hill had suddenly passed away in a tragic hang-gliding accident. Oh, and every minute of this painful revelation and the subsequent reactions was filmed.
The jury is still out on whether the meeting was truly impromptu, especially given what happened after Chris delivered the news to Andi. Andi was overcome with visible and tangible emotion, causing cameramen and crew members to drop everything and comfort her - making sure the camera was perfectly positioned to catch her reaction, of course. Andi, meanwhile, was incredibly distraught due to the last conversation she had with Hill, which was extremely heated and ended with him abruptly leaving the contest before the rose ceremony even took place.
While the moment was undeniably sad and emotional for cast and audience alike, there was something not right about the whole situation. How can one help but wonder how much the producers of the show were a tiny bit gleeful about the ratings they were gaining from the real-life drama playing out right before their eyes?
