Jennie Allen Helps Us Navigate Our Emotions with New Book

In her breakout bestseller, Get Out of Your Head (1 million copies sold/36 weeks NYT List), Jennie Allen, an award-winning author, founder and visionary of IF:Gathering, and popular podcaster, equipped readers to stop the spiral of toxic thinking. Now, in Untangle Your Emotions: Naming What You Feel and Knowing What to Do About It (WaterBrook, Feb. 13, 2024), Allen offers a practical approach to naming our emotions, navigating those feelings in a healthy way, and embracing the healing that comes next.
In this transformational look at our inner life through the lens of science, scripture and personal storytelling, Allen shows us how instead of trying to conceal or control our difficult emotions, we can notice and name our feelings in ways that lead to deeper relationships, richer faith and lasting health.
"I want to break down what we actually can do with our feelings so that, whether you feel a million different things jumbled up or you wonder if your emotions aren't there because you haven't felt in so long, you will have something simple to do that helps anyone starting from anyplace untangle it one step at a time," writes Allen.
Helping people fix their problems has been Allen's key motivation behind writing books and is why she founded and leads IF:Gathering, a nonprofit organization committed to helping people grow in faith and freedom. Coming out of the uncertainty of the pandemic and leading an extraordinarily busy work and family life, Allen hit a wall. She found herself numb. She discovered that she had been so busy fixing stuff that she had neglected to allow space for herself, and those around her, to embrace the emotional part of themselves.
"I'm writing this book not only to help us feel again but also help us start living again," adds Allen.
With vulnerability and courage, Allen touches on topics such as:
- Naming and noticing feelings
- Differentiating thoughts from feelings
- Understanding feelings are meant to be felt, not fixed
- Untangling emotions through five steps: noticing naming, feeling, sharing, and choosing
Allen's earlier bestseller Get Out of Your Head explored the power we have to take control of our thoughts. She stands by every sentence she wrote. It is a great complement to everything she discusses in Untangle Your Emotions. She also recognized, even as she was writing Get Out of Your Head, that something lives beneath our thoughts. Thoughts don't manifest themselves out of nowhere; thoughts are driven by how we feel. Thus, Untangle Your Emotions is the next logical step for anyone who wants to be free, whole, healthy, and connected to their people and God.
With openness and honesty, Allen shares her bold transformational journey from Fix-It Jennie to Feel-It Jennie. She invites readers to come along and untangle their own emotions and discover the gifts of emotional health that leads to wholeheartedness, emotional sturdiness, and peace.
