Hacker News Alert! Gmail Email Account Leaked in a Russian Bitcoin Forum Site
It was reported that nearly 5 million Gmail usernames and passwords have been leaked in a Russian Bitcoin forum site last Tuesday. According to CNews, third-party researchers cited that about 60 percent of these logins (usernames and passwords) are active or valid. With that being pointed out, there are still nearly 3 million users who are possibly at risk.
Bitcoin user "tvskit" posted 4,930,000 Gmail accounts on BTCsec, a Russian Bitcoin forum site. Some who viewed the list said that those were out of date and claimed that those accounts were already deactivated or suspended.
We all know that Gmail usernames and passwords are not only for an email use, this information serves as its way to log in on other Google services. If a person's leaked Gmail information has the same username and password for services that are connected to their virtual accounts such as online banking, then a lot of people are really in jeopardy.
You can check isleaked if your email is included in the leaked email accounts.
According to CNews, Russian Google Representative Svetlana Anurovat commented on this incident and told the publication that experts now understand what happened in this case. She also recommends Gmail users to select strong passwords and be sure to use two-step authentication. Anurovat added that Google is constantly developing new levels of security to protect user accounts and encrypt traffic between its data centers.
According to an interview of TNW to Google, the American multinational corporation does not believe that this is the result of any sort of security breach on its end.
Google Inc. spokesperson told TNW, "The security of our users' information is a top priority for us. We have no evidence that our systems have been compromised, but whenever we become aware that accounts may have been, we take steps to help those users secure their accounts."
If you think that your information is compromised, PLEASE reset your password right away!
