Star Trek 3 news: Third installment of the sci-fi franchise out by 2016, just in time for its 50th anniversary
Star Trek 3 news: Trekkies, it's all systems go.
Fans of the franchise can expect the Star Trek 3 release date for 2016, marking the film's 50th year.
"I think it's on the horizon. Things are rumbling, so I have a feeling that we will be in production sometime in the next six months," said Zachary Quinto, who's expected to reprise his role as Spock.
Star Trek 1 and 2 director J.J. Abrams won't be involved in Star Trek 3 as he has his hands full with Star Wars: Episode VII.
"I feel very lucky to have been part of it, and it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I'm very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whoever that person is," said Abrams.
Filling in his big shoes is Roberto Orci, who is familiar with the franchise as he co-wrote the previous Star Trek installments. John D. Payne and Patrick McKay join Star Trek 3's production team.
A Trekkie himself, Orci plans to make Star Trek 3 as faithful to the original TV series as possible.
William Shatner, the original Captain Kirk, is rumored to have a cameo role in Star Trek 3 alongside the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy.
Star Trek debuted on Sept. 8, 1966.
